All Soul's Service

Children at Gainford CE Primary School and Pre-School have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks to create prayer spaces within St Mary's Church .Reverend Eileen Harrop launched the project within school and the prayer spaces were installed in church and first used at an All Souls' Service on Thursday 1st November . Class 4s idea was of 'Heaven and Earth' with prayers written onto stars.Class 3 had the idea of 'The Empty Chair' symbolising someone loved but no longer with us . The service was very memorable and children were able to think about and talk about their loved ones and alos their pets who were no longer with us . They placed prayers, messages and pictures at each prayer space and had time for reflection and quiet thought .

The children learnt and sang hymns accompanied by Brian Harrop.

Children had lots of comments to say about the service.

" The service was good because we had assembly in church and not in the hall and we got to use the prayer spaces we had made.I felt happy to remember the good times with my dog, Lucy, even though it was very sad to lose her." Joe boy

"I liked to share my prayer about our guinea pig." John Y2

" The service helped me to say how I feel and to handle my emotions .Parents don't always want to talk about people who have died as they don't want to upset us. I enjoyed bringing in photographs and using the prayer spaces ." Lakitta Y6

Mrs Chris Riley , Headteacher, commented
"This has been a fabulous project with both school and church working closely together"
