Woodland Skills

On Wednesday 11 November, Class 3 and 4 took part in a Woodland Skills Day. A woman called Rachel, who was our leader for the morning, talked to us about being safe during our session. We all had to stay out of a circle that we called ‘The Fire Circle’. It was a brilliant, fantastic morning and this was what we did… For the first section of the morning we started to build our dens. First we had to find the perfect spot. We did this straight away (although we had a little squabble!). We started to put the tarpaulin on the branches of the tree. We came up with a double sided den. My group used: a lot of rope, two tarpaulins and four rocks. It was really fun making dens because I don’t make dens very often! One question I wish I had asked is: ‘Could you ever survive on a remote island, in the middle of nowhere, with a few sheets and a piece of flint and steel?’ Because during our session, we used flint and steel to make a fire with cotton buds and sticks. I thought the Woodland Skills session was very helpful if I ever get stranded anywhere!
